It is definitely clear to me the impact and importance of school garden programs if we are to create a real change in this country’s food system, so perhaps what I really need to be focusing on is integrating in the social justice piece. When it comes down to it, I don’t think it is so much about convincing schools that garden or farm to school programs are beneficial as it is making them a realistic and attainable option and resource for communities of ALL socio-economic backgrounds. How do we make these programs universal? More than just a universal idea, but a universal standard of education, health and culture. How do we make them not only accessible, but sustainable? I am thinking it would be interesting to focus on researching and collecting information from a variety of sources, in the form of interviews and meetings with different schools, organizations, and individuals about the inter-workings of these programs. In addition to the hands-on experience of working on-site with youth in gardens and kitchens, there is definitely a lot of valuable information to be obtained regarding the obstacles and realities that come with establishing this sort of curriculum and community involvement and keeping it moving forward. I plan on seeking out any advice, knowledge and stories I can get my hands on and using it to better my understanding of the current state and potential future of school gardens in the US.
